Vibe of Portland is a nonprofit organization providing accessible art and music education for youth.
Each summer, Vibe offers half-day and full-day art camps for children ages 5–14, encouraging imaginative thinking and creative exploration.
Programs are held at Vibe Studios in southeast Portland and at community locations throughout the city.
In Visual Language Lab, students move beyond making individual artworks and begin developing a personal visual language—a system of colors, symbols, shapes, patterns, and textures that communicates ideas, emotions, and stories. This camp challenges young artists to think like designers, inventors, and contemporary artists as they translate abstract ideas into both 2D and sculptural mixed-media works.Campers will research, plan, and organize their ideas, intentionally selecting materials and techniques to support their creative goals. Working primarily in mixed media, students will experiment with unconventional combinations of materials, explore structure and surface, and push the boundaries of how familiar tools can be used in unexpected ways. Through guided prompts and independent studio time, campers learn to prototype, revise, and refine their work while maintaining ownership over their artistic direction.Throughout the week, students will practice concept development, visual problem-solving, and material exploration, learning how choices around color, pattern, scale, and texture shape meaning. Projects will evolve across mediums, allowing campers to translate the same visual language into multiple formats—flat compositions, layered constructions, and three-dimensional forms—strengthening their ability to adapt ideas across contexts. This camp is ideal for creative thinkers who enjoy planning ahead, organizing ideas, working independently, and diving deeply into personal projects. By the end of the experience, students leave with a cohesive body of work, increased confidence in their creative voice, and a stronger understanding of how artists communicate visually through material and design.Embedded Learning Outcomes (Implied Through Practice)
