Saturday Academy is a nonprofit organization providing hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) learning experiences for students in grades K-12.
Each summer, Saturday Academy offers full-day, week-long camps for grades K-8, with programming focused on STEAM topics such as robotics, animation, engineering, and more.
Camps are primarily held on the University of Portland campus in North Portland, with some sessions at Portland State University and OHSU.
CREATORS mine STEAM inspiration from a variety of core STEAM industries and skills to put their ideas into action. The ultimate celebration of experimentation, Creators create a community of different, but like-minded next generation innovators.
Sessions Include:
Entrepreneurial Creators: Commerce Lab - June 29 - July 2:Step into your confident self in this innovative learning experience! Creators will design their own product concepts while exploring graphic design, branding, public speaking, and budgeting. From shaping a concept and managing costs to creating a pitch presentation, campers will think like entrepreneurs and build the growth mindset needed to confidently share their ideas with others in this unique nine-day experience. Each day will feature unique challenges facing entrepreneurs today, alongside progressive work that culminates in a final sharing of their work for family and friends. This deeper dive focuses on skills and process, while ensuring collaboration and practical real world advice.
Entrepreneurial Creators: Social Impact Lab - July 6-10: What do you care about? How can you create a business that supports your passions? Energize your summer by combining community-centered business modeling alongside fun and dynamic digital marketing tools. Listen, respond, create, test, and ensure your targeted audience knows the services you can provide! Receive feedback and support from an emerging group of caring professional entrepreneurs in a pitch session and fine-tune your own approach.
Future Creators: Machine Learning Lab - July 13-17: Join this unique one-to-two week camp experience designed to future-proof critical thinkers! Blending hands-on project based learning, creators will learn how AI systems actually work to better understand how machines learn. With a focus on pattern recognition, data analysis, and utilizing kid-friendly tools for understanding fundamental programming concepts, these creators will be ready to approach the world in a more informed way. BONUS: they'll have a blast doing it! The outcome this first week will be to train a variety of models to share with family and friends.
Future Creators: Robotics Learning Lab - July 20-24: Join this unique one-to-two week camp experience designed to future-proof critical thinkers! With a focus on turning AI into action, creators will explore a range of robotics applications and designs. Building, coding, and creating machines that can move, identifying why AI can still make mistakes, and leveraging the invention mindset to apply robotics solutions to real world problems.
Athletic Creators - July 27-31: Go behind the scenes of the sports industry to explore the diversity of professions and skills necessary off-the-field! From sports medicine to journalism, sports broadcasting to coaching/managing, we are redefining the concept of "team" in this exciting exploration of who it takes to play the games we love. Students will build leadership and communication skills while discovering how a love of sports can turn into a future career.
Animation Creators - August 3-7: Give life to your ideas and stories! This camp invites students to enliven their imaginings by creating moving images. Start by tackling the process of translating an idea to the story, then get to know the software needed to craft dynamic animations. Campers apply their learnings to a final project to be shared with an audience!
Sustainability Creators August 10-14:Spend a week identifying key challenges our climate is facing! Build your knowledge and creative brainstorm with like- minded planet-oriented friends experimenting with the unique ways our ecosystems are connected.
