Saturday Academy is a nonprofit organization providing hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) learning experiences for students in grades K-12.

Each summer, Saturday Academy offers full-day, week-long camps for grades K-8, with programming focused on STEAM topics such as robotics, animation, engineering, and more.

Camps are primarily held on the University of Portland campus in North Portland, with some sessions at Portland State University and OHSU.

About the activity:

MAKERS answer the question, "How does it work?" and empowers YOU to do it yourself! With an emphasis on process, campers learn and tackle various skills within favorite STEAM topics. Dive deeper into whatever sparks your curiosity and BONUS, meet real-world professionals alongside dynamic educators to make concepts real.
Sessions Include:
Engineering Makers - June 29 - July 2: Expand your mind and explore gravity, force, predictability, motion, and more. The perfect camp for the builder and burgeoning designer in your house! Explore various fields of engineering, from mechanical to civil. BONUS: meet a real world engineer who gets up everyday to create solutions for the world around us!
Gaming Makers - July 6-10: In this unique, four day experience, makers can join for one day or the whole week! This is the ultimate celebration of games! From game theory and strategy, to characters and world building, each day makers will focus on tabletop, card, or outdoor games. Students will take the fundamentals and translate them into new games, designing and creating original elements to gamify and share. BONUS: meet a real-world professional who makes their living in Virtual Reality.
Robotics Makers - July 6-10: Campers use LEGOs to examine and apply the fundamentals of physics, then unpack how physics are applied to robotics! Expand your mind and explore gravity, force, predictability, motion, and more. The perfect camp for the builder and burgeoning engineer in your house!
Art Makers - July 13-17 : This artistic sampler invites students into a different world of visual art each day, exploring tactile and optical creation of both the two- and three-dimensional kind! Makers refine the skills utilized by artists of all disciplines, and embrace sharing thoughts or perspectives through various visual representations, including photography, painting, clay-work, drawing, and more! BONUS: meet a professional visual artist who makes their living creating everyday!
Science Makers - July 20-24: In this scientific sampler, Makers exercise their curiosity! Each day features new questions. Design and conduct experiments, observe critically, and synthesize your findings to communicate your discoveries. Ultimately, these scientists will develop theories and test them, working to explore real world problems and possible solutions for a better world. Each week will feature fun challenges in science, technology, engineerings, the arts, and math- as they are interconnected. BONUS: Makers get the chance to meet a real-world scientist and then step into their shoes to learn more.
Bookworm Makers - July 27-31 : This is the camp for those who love all things story! From creative writing to book binding, illustration to free-reading, look at this week as the ultimate library. Every day will feature unique literary challenges alongside a progressive project as students work individually, in pairs, and in small groups to form their own book club as unique as the campers who attend. BONUS: Makers will meet an author and illustrator who writes and makes zines for a living!
Play Makers - August 3-7 : Assemble the ensemble and devise your own original story to be shared with an audience! Makers explore each component of theatrical storytelling, from playwriting to directing, designing to performing. Guided by artistic educators, Makers explore what they uniquely possess that should be celebrated on a stage.
Animation Makers - August 10-14: Students delve into the world of animation! Researching, writing, character development, storyboarding, and coding fundamentals will make for a special camp experience. From sketching and illustrating flipbooks to analyzing animated films, Makers engage in a vast array of skills required to bring this unique art form to life.
